Once Clearly Wasn’t Enough… Netflix Viewers Say They’ve Watched This Brilliant ’90s Movie More Than 10 Times, And Now It’s Trending Again — Proving Some Films Somehow Become Even More Addictive Every Time You Rewatch Them

Netflix Viewers Are Rediscovering A ‘Brilliant’ 90s Psychological Thriller — And Fans Say They Wish They Could Forget Its Ending Just To Watch It Again

A psychological thriller released nearly three decades ago is finding a fresh audience on Netflix, with viewers praising its unforgettable conclusion and some admitting they wish they could erase the movie from their memories simply to experience it for the first time again.

The 1999 film has become a talking point on social media after being recommended as an essential watch for anyone searching for something gripping, frightening and surprisingly emotional.

Some fans say they have watched it as many as 10 times.

Others needed to replay it immediately after their first viewing.

And one viewer went even further, describing its famous conclusion as the “best ending to a film I’ve ever seen.”

For anyone who has somehow avoided spoilers for the past 27 years, that might be reason enough to watch.

A 90s Classic Finds Another Audience On Netflix

The Sixth Sense

Film and television content creator Luke Ecclestone, who posts as Eccy Reviews and has around 480,000 TikTok followers, recently highlighted the movie after noticing it trending on Netflix.

His recommendation was emphatic.

“Stop wasting your Netflix and watch this film,” he wrote over the video.

Speaking to his followers, Ecclestone described it as “one of the best and most shocking films you will ever see in your entire life.”

The movie he was recommending was M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense.

Released on August 6, 1999, the psychological horror became famous for unsettling audiences while delivering a story that was as interested in grief and human connection as it was in frightening them.

And more than a quarter of a century later, viewers are still being drawn back to it.

Haley Joel Osment Plays A Boy With A Terrifying Secret

The Sixth Sense 20th Anniversary: Oral History with M. Night Shyamalan

At the center of The Sixth Sense is Cole Sear, a deeply troubled young boy played by Haley Joel Osment, who was just 10 years old at the time.

Cole possesses an ability he does not understand and desperately wishes he could escape.

He can see and communicate with dead people.

The experience leaves him frightened and isolated, with Osment portraying the character’s fear, anxiety and vulnerability as Cole attempts to understand what is happening to him.

But his journey gradually becomes about more than simply surviving those encounters.

Cole begins to realize that the spirits appearing to him may need something from him, forcing the terrified child to find the courage to confront rather than avoid them.

Bruce Willis Took A Very Different Kind Of Role

Attempting to help Cole is child psychologist Dr Malcolm Crowe, played by Bruce Willis.

Crowe is carrying his own psychological wounds following a violent encounter with a former patient and becomes determined to understand what is happening to the boy.

For Willis, the quietly compassionate role represented a notable contrast to the action characters with which many moviegoers associated him.

By then, audiences knew him particularly well as John McClane from the Die Hard films.

Dr Crowe required something very different.

Instead of wisecracks and explosive action, Willis delivers a restrained performance built around conversations, observation and the developing relationship between psychologist and patient.

That relationship forms the emotional core of the movie.

‘You Will Never, Ever Forget’ It

The legacy of The Sixth Sense

Ecclestone acknowledged that many movie fans will consider The Sixth Sense too famous to qualify as a hidden recommendation.

But he argued that there are still people who have never watched it.

“This is already trending on Netflix, and if you’re someone who’s seen it, you’ll be like, ‘everyone has seen this’ but I genuinely know people who haven’t — and this film is genuinely incredible,” he said.

He also warned viewers that the movie can become genuinely frightening.

“This film is absolutely horrifying in parts,” he said. “It is very emotional, but the story is so gripping you’ll be on the edge of your seat from start to finish.”

His strongest recommendation concerned what happens when the story reaches its conclusion.

“Once this film ends and you see the credits, you generally will never, ever forget about this film ever again.”

Crucially, he urged people familiar with the movie not to reveal why.

Fans Say The Ending Is Still Unforgettable

That spoiler warning was echoed by the reaction from viewers.

One fan placed the movie among the “Top 10 films of all time without a doubt.”

Another simply called it “a classic.”

But perhaps the strongest indication of the film’s staying power came from people who have returned to it repeatedly despite already knowing its secrets.

“I’ve watched this film 10 times, it’s brilliant and I still cry,” one viewer wrote.

Another recalled their reaction after experiencing it for the first time: “I had to watch it a second time straight away the first time I saw it. Great film.”

One fan declared: “Best ending to a film I’ve ever seen.”

And another summed up the strange problem facing anyone recommending The Sixth Sense to somebody who has somehow avoided knowing too much about it.

“If only I could wipe my memory and watch it with fresh eyes!”

The Less You Know, The Better

The Sixth Sense - Parents' Guide & Movie Review | Common Sense Media

More than 25 years of pop-culture discussion makes going into The Sixth Sense completely unaware increasingly difficult.

Yet for viewers who have managed it, the best approach may be to keep it that way.

The movie’s reputation is closely tied to its conclusion, but reducing it solely to its famous ending overlooks much of what made the film resonate in the first place.

Cole’s fear, Crowe’s attempts to reach him and the emotional themes beneath the supernatural story all contribute to why viewers continue revisiting it even when there are no surprises left.

That may also explain why a movie released in 1999 can suddenly find itself trending again in the streaming era.

Some viewers are returning for the tenth time.

Others are finally discovering what the fuss was about.

But if you’re fortunate enough to belong to the second group, avoiding spoilers before pressing play could make all the difference.

The Sixth Sense is streaming on Netflix.
