Netflix Adds a Dark True-Story Thriller Starring Russell Crowe and Jacob Tremblay — but Critics Are Deeply Divided Over Its Chilling Harvard Story

Netflix viewers searching for their next unsettling true-crime thriller have a new option — and its cast alone is likely to turn heads.

Jacob Tremblay, Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley and Annabelle Wallis lead Unabomber, a dark drama inspired by the story of Ted Kaczynski and the disturbing path that took a gifted Harvard student toward one of America’s most notorious criminal cases.

The film traces Kaczynski’s transformation from a 16-year-old Harvard prodigy into the man responsible for a mail-bombing campaign that lasted nearly two decades, killing three people and injuring 23 others.

But rather than beginning solely with the eventual manhunt, the movie turns its attention toward an earlier and deeply controversial chapter of his life.

A Harvard Prodigy With a Troubled Past

According to the official synopsis, Unabomber follows Kaczynski’s transformation while examining his experiences with Professor Henry Murray, portrayed by Crowe.

The synopsis states that Kaczynski was “subjected to controversial psychological experiments” by Murray.

Years later, that troubled history resurfaces as investigators close in.

The story follows an FBI manhunt led by agent Joanne Miller, played by Woodley, while exploring what the film describes as the consequences of “ambition and isolation.”

Tremblay takes on the central role of the young Kaczynski.

The actor, known for films including Room and Sovereign, is joined by an unusually recognizable ensemble.

Crowe portrays Professor Henry Murray, placing the Oscar-winning Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind star at the center of the film’s Harvard storyline.

Woodley, known for The Descendants and Divergent, plays FBI agent Joanne Miller.

Meanwhile, Peaky Blinders and Malignant actress Annabelle Wallis appears as Christiana Morgan, described as Murray’s academic partner.

The supporting cast also includes Alexander Ludwig, whose credits include The Hunger Games and Earth Abides, alongside The Walking Dead actor Steven Ogg and Dexter: Resurrection star Marc Menchaca.

With that lineup and a notorious real-life case at its center, the film appears designed to appeal to viewers drawn to Netflix’s darker psychological and true-crime dramas.

Critical reaction, however, has been far from unanimous.

Critics Can’t Agree on the Movie

Reviews have ranged from praise for the film’s gripping qualities to criticism of its approach to the material.

Screen Rant described it as “an odd movie that is both fragmented and, frankly, feels a bit problematic.”

The Telegraph was similarly unimpressed, awarding the movie two stars and describing it as “lazy.”

But other reviewers found considerably more to appreciate.

The Irish Independent called the film “gripping.”

LCJ Reviews highlighted the performances, praising the cast’s “fine work,” although its assessment came with a significant qualification.

The review described the film as “watchable” but argued that it was not as layered or gripping as other true-story crime dramas.

That divided reaction may make the movie particularly intriguing for thriller fans who prefer forming their own verdict.

A Familiar Case From a Different Angle

The story of Kaczynski has been explored extensively in documentaries, books and dramatizations.

Here, the focus described by Netflix connects his younger years at Harvard with the much later investigation into the bombing campaign.

That structure gives Tremblay and Crowe a central place in the psychological side of the story, while Woodley’s FBI character represents the investigation closing in decades later.

The result is a film attempting to combine several elements at once: psychological drama, true crime, an FBI investigation and the examination of a gifted young man’s descent into infamy.

Whether that combination works appears to depend heavily on which critic you ask.

A Dark Weekend Watch for True-Crime Fans

Watch Trailer Below:

Netflix has built a substantial audience for tense thrillers and true-crime stories, and Unabomber arrives with many of the ingredients likely to attract that crowd.

There is a disturbing real-life case.

There is an acclaimed, recognizable cast.

And at the center is a transformation from gifted teenage student to one of America’s most infamous criminals.

Yet the mixed reviews suggest this isn’t necessarily another universally acclaimed Netflix crime drama.

Some critics found it gripping.

Others considered it fragmented, problematic or disappointing.

That disagreement may ultimately be part of the attraction.

For viewers fascinated by psychological true-crime stories — particularly those interested in the unsettling period before the crimes became national headlines — Unabomber offers a dark new dramatization with Jacob Tremblay and Russell Crowe facing each other at the heart of the story.

One tiny word. One disputed point. And Only Connect fans were NOT convinced. An ABCD puzzle looked like it had a clear pattern — until “taxi” entered the equation through the word “cab.” The answer was accepted, but viewers immediately questioned whether CAB really followed the same acronym pattern as the other clues. Some fans argued that the connection simply didn’t fit, while others debated whether the answer was fair enough to earn the point. It was just one small detail, but it was enough to send viewers into a heated debate over one of Only Connect’s most important rules: does the answer actually match the connection?
