Taylor Sheridan Walked Away From This Action-Thriller World Eight Years Ago… Now He’s Finally Coming Back, Reviving The Franchise Fans Refused To Give Up On After Nearly A Decade Of Waiting For His Return

Eight years of uncertainty surrounding the future of Sicario may finally be over.

A third movie is now reportedly in active development, and perhaps the biggest reason for fans of the brutal crime-thriller franchise to get excited is the man returning to write it.

Taylor Sheridan is officially back for Sicario 3.

Long before Yellowstone, Landman and Mayor of Kingstown helped turn Sheridan into one of television’s most prolific creators, his screenplay for the original Sicario established many of the trademarks that would later define his work.

Now he appears ready to return to that world for a third chapter.

Rumors about a third installment, often referred to as Sicario: Capos, have circulated since the release of Sicario: Day of the Soldado in 2018.

For years, however, the project remained uncertain.

According to a recent Variety report cited by MovieWeb, the third film is now moving forward, with Sheridan returning to write the screenplay.

The development comes as Sheridan prepares for another major career transition.

His long-running relationship with Paramount is expected to conclude in 2029 before he moves to NBCUniversal. According to the report, Sheridan has written both Sicario 3 and the upcoming Call of Duty movie ahead of that departure.

For Sicario fans, his involvement is significant.

Sheridan wrote both previous installments, meaning the third film can retain the creative voice responsible for building the franchise’s bleak, morally complicated world.

Sicario Helped Launch Sheridan’s Career

Released in 2015, the original Sicario arrived three years before audiences first entered the Dutton family’s world in Yellowstone.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Sheridan, the film starred Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin.

The story initially centers on Blunt’s FBI agent, but gradually pulls her into a far murkier operation where conventional distinctions between justice and criminality begin disappearing.

The movie became a critical success and earned multiple Academy Award nominations, while helping establish Sheridan as a major screenwriter.

Its combination of slow-building dread, sudden violence and morally compromised characters would become increasingly recognizable throughout his later work.

The Sequel Couldn’t Match the Original — but Sheridan Stayed

Three years later came Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

Villeneuve did not return to direct, with Stefano Sollima taking over behind the camera, but Sheridan remained as screenwriter.

The sequel again followed the darker characters played by Brolin and del Toro.

Although it was moderately successful, it failed to generate the same level of acclaim as Villeneuve’s original.

Still, it expanded the world Sheridan had created and left open the possibility of another installment.

That possibility has lingered ever since.

Now, after years of speculation, Sheridan’s reported return finally gives the proposed trilogy a clearer path forward.

Sicario Contains the Blueprint for Yellowstone and Landman

Looking back at Sicario after Sheridan’s enormous television success also reveals how much of his creative identity was already present.

His screenplay moves between lengthy stretches of controlled tension and explosive violence.

Even more importantly, it refuses to give audiences straightforward heroes.

Blunt’s character may provide the film’s moral perspective, but Brolin and del Toro play characters willing to cross legal and ethical boundaries in pursuit of their objectives.

That fascination with morally gray antiheroes became a recurring feature of Sheridan’s later work.

John Dutton in Yellowstone, Tommy Norris in Landman and Mike McCluskey in Mayor of Kingstown all operate within complicated worlds where traditional ideas of right and wrong rarely provide easy answers.

The neo-Western sensibility associated with Sheridan’s television empire can therefore be traced back to the unforgiving landscapes and compromised characters of Sicario.

Expectations for the Third Movie Just Got Higher

There are still major unanswered questions surrounding Sicario 3, including exactly where the story will go and which familiar characters will return.

But Sheridan’s involvement removes one of the biggest uncertainties.

The first two movies were connected by his writing even as their directors changed, and bringing him back gives the third installment an opportunity to preserve the tone and worldview established almost a decade ago.

For a filmmaker and television creator now synonymous with sprawling modern Westerns, Sicario remains particularly important.

It helped introduce audiences to the tension, violence and morally ambiguous characters that would eventually become Sheridan trademarks.

Before the Duttons, before Landman and before his television empire, there was Sicario. Now Taylor Sheridan is returning to the franchise that helped define his career — with a third movie finally positioned to complete the trilogy.
