‘Cupertino’ Series Premiere Recap: The Kings Deliver a Sharp, Scrappy Silicon Valley David vs. Goliath
From the creative minds of Robert and Michelle King (The Good Wife, The Good Fight, Evil), CBS’s new legal drama Cupertino establishes its central premise right out of the gate: holding Big Tech accountable when no one else in the Valley will dare cross them.
The premiere episode, titled “Michael & Olivia,” sets up the origin story of Price, Siffre & Associates—a boutique insurgent law firm operating on a shoestring budget to take on the untouchable tech behemoths known locally as the “Magnificent 7.”
The Meet-Cute on the Curb
The pilot opens with two abrupt terminations at S-Talk, a high-flying tech startup:
Michael Price (Mike Colter): A seasoned senior counsel blindsided and pushed out just before the company’s lucrative valuation spikes.
Olivia Siffre (Rachel Keller): A green law school graduate fired after rejecting inappropriate romantic advances—and an unsolicited nude photo—from one of S-Talk’s co-founders.
Waiting for rides on the curb with their personal belongings boxed up, Olivia quietly tips Michael off that senior executives schemed behind closed doors to strip him of his equity.
When Michael realizes no established Northern California firm will touch a lawsuit against S-Talk—reminded that “Lawyers here don’t make money from suing people. They make money by getting a piece of a startup”—he approaches Olivia with a mutual offensive: teaming up to file joint suits for wrongful termination and sexual harassment.
Voice Cloning and IHOP Legal Strategy
Olivia initially hesitates, reluctant to subject her socially conservative, Christian-publisher parents to the public scrutiny of a high-profile harassment scandal. Her stance shifts overnight when she watches a television interview where the founder unveils S-Talk’s flagship product: Daisy, an AI assistant synthesized using Olivia’s cloned voice without consent (which turns explicit once content filters are disabled).
Deciding to stay in the Bay Area and fight, Olivia agrees to partner with Michael. With S-Talk quickly firing back with an aggressive $18 million countersuit, the duo sets up an improvised war room inside an IHOP.
Joining them is Christy (Ella Stiller), Michael’s former assistant who was sacked by S-Talk simply for answering his calls. Splitting shifts at TGI Fridays, Christy steps in as the team’s relentless fixer and office finder.
Courtroom Reversals and Fake Offices
Representing each other in court, the fledgling partners face immediate setbacks:
A Compromised Bench: Michael’s opening petition is initially dismissed until he exposes the presiding judge’s personal financial ties to S-Talk, forcing a recusal that brings in a more receptive magistrate.
Family Distractions & Bribes: Michael’s estranged father, celebrity defense attorney Bayard Price (Joe Morton), arrives unexpectedly in the gallery. Soon after, Michael is offered a massive settlement package tied to a strict non-disclosure agreement—on the condition that he drop Olivia’s defense, which he refuses.
The Unfinished Office: Christy leverages family connections to lease an affordable commercial suite. While the lobby looks pristine, the interior space behind the front wall is completely unfinished exposed ductwork. Undeterred, Christy declares: “We start winning some cases, we pay the rent, we build a new wall with each case.”
The Winning Card and the Birth of a Firm
When their courtroom arguments stall and Olivia fails to prove racial discrimination in Michael’s ouster, she resorts to high-stakes leverage.
Calling the predatory founder to the witness stand, Olivia angles her laptop screen away from the judge and opposing counsel, flashing the unsolicited explicit photo he sent her. Rattled by the imminent threat of public exposure, the founder demands his legal team negotiate an immediate settlement.
Back at the firm’s half-built office, Christy orchestrates an elaborate illusion: recruiting her fellow TGI Fridays waitstaff to pose as busy paralegals and corporate clients. Despite a partition wall nearly toppling during settlement discussions, the bluff works. The settlement goes through, spooking S-Talk’s outside investors and delaying the company’s growth for years.
Recognizing an immense void in the Silicon Valley ecosystem, Michael proposes making the partnership permanent:
“There are no Silicon Valley law firms representing the exploited. I know. I tried to find one.”
Just as the duo commits to the venture, a panicked, disheveled man bursts through the lobby doors begging for urgent protection from unknown tech pursuers.
“Welcome to Price & Siffre,” Michael greets him. “Who’s out to get you?”
