Stephen Graham’s Terrifying New Apple TV Crime Thriller Is Being Compared to The Silence of the Lambs — and His Serial Killer Performance Is Almost Impossible to Watch

Stephen Graham has played some deeply disturbing characters throughout his career, but his latest performance in Apple TV’s psychological thriller Nocturne may be among his most frightening yet.

The acclaimed British actor stars as Jurek Walter, a calculating serial killer whose ability to manipulate and terrorize others remains dangerously powerful even after he is confined to a psychiatric hospital.

Based on Lars Kepler’s internationally bestselling novel The Sandman, the 10-part series combines a chilling murder investigation with psychological suspense and an ensemble cast led by Liev Schreiber and Zazie Beetz.

And Graham’s portrayal is already drawing comparisons to one of cinema’s most terrifying villains: Hannibal Lecter.

Created for television by John Hlavin and Rowan Joffe, Nocturne begins when a victim previously believed to have died at Jurek Walter’s hands unexpectedly reappears.

The discovery reopens a disturbing investigation and draws former soldier and homicide detective Jonah Lynn, played by Schreiber, back into a case he thought was behind him.

With another victim potentially still alive, investigators face a desperate race against time.

But Jurek’s confinement offers little reassurance.

Even inside a psychiatric institution, the killer continues exerting psychological control over those around him, threatening Jonah’s family and everyone involved in the investigation.

FBI agent Saga Bauer, portrayed by Beetz, becomes increasingly entangled in the case as the hunt intensifies.

What makes Graham’s performance especially unsettling is the contrast between Jurek’s outward composure and his disturbing intentions.

Rather than relying on explosive outbursts, the character uses carefully measured speech, subtle gestures and an unnerving sense of calm to manipulate people.

His strangely childlike laugh adds another layer of discomfort.

The performance recalls Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, particularly in the way both characters remain psychologically threatening despite being detained.

For viewers familiar with Graham’s portrayal of Combo in This Is England, Jurek represents an even colder kind of menace.

Where Combo displayed occasional glimpses of humanity, Jurek appears almost entirely devoid of empathy.

A Powerful Cast Makes the Mystery Even More Compelling

Graham is supported by Rory Culkin as Karl, an inexperienced psychiatric nurse assigned to work with Jurek.

Karl’s hopeful nature makes him especially vulnerable to the killer’s manipulation, creating some of the drama’s most uncomfortable encounters.

Meanwhile, Schreiber brings emotional weight to Jonah, a detective struggling with the consequences of his past.

Beetz delivers a layered performance as Saga, whose involvement in the investigation becomes increasingly personal.

Poorna Jagannathan also appears as special agent Alexandra Quinn, another formidable character carrying unresolved emotional burdens.

Together, the ensemble transforms Nocturne into more than a conventional serial killer thriller.

Its intricate mystery, shifting loyalties and psychological confrontations create a story that is as emotionally demanding as it is suspenseful.

Although the plotting occasionally ventures into elaborate territory reminiscent of Harlan Coben adaptations, the performances keep the drama grounded.

The result is a deeply unsettling crime series in which the most terrifying moments often come not from violence, but from watching Graham’s character quietly gain control over another person.

Nocturne premieres on Apple TV on October 30, 2026, with its first two episodes.
