It’s Not the Awards or the Fame… Dolly Parton Once Revealed The One Thing She Wanted People To Remember About Her — And Her Words Carry An Entirely Different Weight Now

Dolly Parton Once Revealed How She Hoped to Be Remembered

Dolly Parton spent more than six decades becoming one of country music’s most recognizable figures. But when she was asked how she wanted people to remember her, the answer had little to do with awards, hit songs or fame.

Parton died at age 80 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Her family announced her passing through a video shared on her official social media accounts, with her nephew Bryan Seaver delivering the news on behalf of the Parton and Owens families. Parton’s team later confirmed that she had died peacefully earlier that day.

Seaver described his aunt as Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, remembering her not only as a legendary entertainer but as a sister, aunt, grandmother and great-aunt to different generations of the family.

He said Dolly was now “in the arms of Jesus” and imagined that she had been reunited with her husband, Carl Dean, her parents and others who had been waiting to welcome her. Seaver also acknowledged the profound sadness surrounding her death, while emphasizing that Dolly herself had lived her life fully.

“I have imagined the heaviness of this moment, but haven’t truly felt it until now,” he said. “It is an honor. An honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly.”

The Legacy Dolly Parton Wanted to Leave Behind

Parton’s influence stretched far beyond country music.

The singer behind “Jolene” earned numerous honors throughout her career, including Grammy Awards and inductions into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She also established herself as an actress, appearing in films such as 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Her name eventually became a brand of its own, with licensing and partnerships bringing Dolly Parton products to categories ranging from clothing and home goods to food.

She also helped turn Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, into a major attraction. Parton became involved with the park in the 1980s and helped shape it into a destination centered on the culture and heritage of the Smoky Mountains.

Yet for all of those accomplishments, Parton said there was something much simpler at the heart of the legacy she hoped to leave.

During a 2023 interview with WSMV4 Nashville’s Holly Thompson, Parton was asked how she wanted to be remembered. Her response focused on the kind of person she tried to be rather than the celebrity she became.

“I want to be remembered as a good person. A person that tried to do good,” Parton said. “Tried to make the most of every good thing I was given.”

She also singled out one accomplishment that had become especially meaningful to her: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Why the Imagination Library Meant So Much to Dolly

Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995, initially creating the program for children in her home county in East Tennessee.

The idea was simple: give young children free books and help foster a love of reading. The program initially focused on preschool-aged children and mailed books directly to their homes at no cost to their families.

What began as a local effort eventually expanded across the United States and later internationally. The Imagination Library now operates in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Republic of Ireland.

Parton’s connection to the program was deeply personal. It was inspired in part by her father’s inability to read and write, and the organization became one of the clearest expressions of her commitment to helping children discover books and the possibilities they can open up.

By 2024, the Imagination Library reported that one in seven children under the age of five in the United States, or 14 percent, received a book through the program each month. That year alone, the organization gifted more than 36.7 million books worldwide.

The program had also surpassed 3 million registered children worldwide in 2024, while distributing more than 3 million books every month.

For Parton, the work represented something larger than another achievement to add to an already extraordinary résumé. She believed the Imagination Library could become as important to her legacy as her music.

“I’m very proud of the Imagination Library, where we give books to children,” she told WSMV4. “I think that’ll be as big a part of my legacy as my songwriting and my singing.”

That vision has continued to grow. The Imagination Library says it has now mailed more than 270 million free, age-appropriate books to children since its founding.

Dolly Parton leaves behind an extraordinary body of music, film performances, business ventures and cultural achievements. But her own words suggest that the legacy closest to her heart was ultimately about kindness, making the most of the gifts she had been given and helping children discover the joy of reading.

For the millions of people who grew up with her songs, her films or the books sent through her Imagination Library, that legacy will continue long after her passing.

Families can check whether the Imagination Library is available in their area through the program’s official website.
