Period drama and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story fans simply can’t afford to miss this historical epic.
The BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated film The Madness of King George graced cinema screens in 1994, chronicling the life of King George III during the Regency Crisis of 1788 to 1789, reports the Express.
The film documents King George III’s mental health episode in 1788, which triggers a Parliamentary power struggle. As the title implies, the film delves into the monarch’s descent into madness and the medical treatments he’s compelled to undergo at the time in an attempt to restore his sanity.
The Madness of King George was adapted by celebrated playwright Alan Bennett, drawing from his 1991 stage play of the same name, while The History Boys and The Crucible director Nicholas Hytner oversaw the production.
Further cast members include Ian Holm, Amanda Donohoe, Sherlock’s Rupert Graves, Rupert Everett, Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter, Geoffrey Palmer, and Julian Rhind-Tutt, amongst numerous others.
The Madness of King George covers a comparable era to Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on Netflix, offering an alternative perspective on the narrative.
The 1994 production has previously attracted glowing praise on IMDb, with one reviewer awarding it 9/10, describing it as “truly amazing” and calling it “some sort of lost masterpiece with a soft theater [sic] look”. A second reviewer headlined their critique: “Outstanding, impeccable, exquisitely done combination of tragedy and comedy…”
They went on to say: “As usual in all of these British historical pieces, the settings, costumes, photography, art direction–all are exquisite.”

A third contributed in their 10/10 review, entitled “faultless”: “An absolutely masterful performance from Hawthorne, matched by Ian Holm’s doctor. If you haven’t seen this film, then I’d urge you to do so. Not many of you will fail to be impressed.”
While another viewer wrote: “This is a standout film. If you have not seen it and you consider yourself a lover of movies – go and see it immediately. It is a beautiful depiction of an interesting historical period and the dilemmas faced by countries lead by accidents of genetics.”
The film garnered a host of award nominations, securing Oscar recognition for both Mirren and Hawthorne, and ultimately claiming Best Art Direction.
