Dolly Parton’s Welsh Family Secret Resurfaces After Her Passing — And A New Discovery Has Changed The Story After Dolly Parton’s passing, researchers revisited the Welsh ancestry she proudly embraced — and uncovered an unexpected twist. Her family had long connected their roots to one Welsh town. But a newly traced ancestor, born in 1584, points somewhere else entirely. Dolly always said Wales felt like “family.” Now, this discovery may reveal just how deep that connection really went.

Dolly Parton’s Welsh Roots Revisited After Her Death as New Research Points to a Different Ancestral Home

Dolly Parton’s death at 80 has prompted fans around the world to revisit the extraordinary life she left behind. In Wales, however, it has also renewed interest in a lesser-known part of her story: the country music legend’s Welsh ancestry.

For years, Parton and members of her family spoke warmly about their connection to Wales through her mother, Avie Lee Owens. The family believed the Owens branch could be traced to Conwy in North Wales, a connection that received renewed attention during a 2025 BBC documentary.

Now, research carried out by staff at Conwy council’s archives has introduced an intriguing new possibility. Their investigation suggests that at least one branch of Parton’s ancestry may instead lead to Machynlleth, where researchers say her eighth great-grandfather, William Owen Jr, was born in 1584.

The finding does not definitively rule out a wider family connection to Conwy, but it adds another chapter to a Welsh story that fascinated Parton herself.

Parton’s Welsh heritage comes through the family of her mother, Avie Lee Owens. The singer often credited her maternal relatives with helping shape the musical traditions that surrounded her childhood in Tennessee.

Her family’s own genealogy project has traced the Owens and Parton lines back centuries. The official Smoky Mountain DNA family-history project says the Owens family originated in Wales before descendants eventually settled in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee.

For some time, Conwy was believed to be a key location in that story.

After hearing those claims, researchers at Conwy’s archives decided to investigate further using publicly available genealogical resources.

Researcher Elysia Garner said curiosity prompted the team to construct a family tree. According to the research reported by the BBC, their work eventually led to William Owen Jr, identified as Parton’s eighth great-grandfather and believed to have been born in Machynlleth in 1584.

The researchers stressed that their findings do not prove Parton had no ancestral connection to Conwy. With much of the family tree stretching back centuries, some branches could not be traced far enough to reach a definitive conclusion.

That uncertainty is important. Previous genealogical accounts have identified Conwy as the origin of the Owens family, while the newer archival research points toward Machynlleth for one ancestral line.

Dolly Parton had long embraced her Welsh connection

Whatever the precise town at the beginning of the family story, Parton herself was delighted by her connection to Wales.

During a 2008 appearance at Cardiff International Arena, she reportedly told the audience about her Welsh ancestry. She later explained that members of her mother’s Owens family came from Wales and said her visits to the country carried a special sense of familiarity.

She had visited Wales several times and described the experience as feeling like being around family.

The connection became a bigger public story decades later as relatives investigated the family tree more deeply.

Parton’s niece Jada Star previously said discovering the family’s Welsh roots had been an extraordinary experience. The family was particularly fascinated by the possibility that its long musical tradition might stretch back through generations and across the Atlantic.

That idea fitted naturally with Parton’s own upbringing. Her mother knew traditional songs and old ballads passed down through generations, while music was embedded throughout the Owens family. Parton herself repeatedly credited her mother’s side with influencing her musical gifts.

The Welsh connection also became part of comedian Rob Brydon’s BBC series Honky Tonk Road Trip, which explored a century of country music across the American South.

During a visit to Dollywood, Brydon spoke with Parton’s niece Heidi Parton about the family’s ancestry.

Heidi explained that relatives had traced both the Owens and Parton sides of the family back to roughly the 1600s and 1700s. When the conversation turned to whether the Owens name pointed toward Wales, the possibility produced a characteristically playful reaction from Brydon.

The idea that one of Tennessee’s most famous musical exports might have roots in Wales allowed him to draw amusing parallels between Parton’s mountain upbringing, distinctive voice and Welsh musical culture.

Yet behind the joke was a genuine family-history project.

Parton’s Smoky Mountain DNA project was created to explore generations of both sides of her family and their musical legacy, tracing their journey from the United Kingdom to East Tennessee.

Wales remembers Dolly

Following Parton’s death, tributes from Wales reflected how widely her influence had travelled.

Sir Tom Jones remembered his fellow music legend with a heartfelt tribute, praising her distinctive voice, generosity and enormous influence on generations of performers.

Their connection gave an additional poignancy to Brydon’s earlier joke about Parton’s Welsh heritage and her musical links to Jones.

Actress Amber Davies, who comes from Conwy, also remembered Parton personally. Davies appeared in the West End production of 9 to 5: The Musical and credited Parton with giving her an important early opportunity in her career.

For Welsh country singer Eleri Angharad, performing as Parton in the tribute act Different Divas provided a different perspective on the star’s work.

Studying the songs closely revealed to Angharad how much emotional depth could sit beneath Parton’s seemingly simple songwriting. Performing the material also demonstrated just how deeply songs such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You” had become embedded in popular culture.

A connection that stretched beyond genealogy

Welsh cook and broadcaster Sam Evans also developed an unusual personal connection to Parton’s world.

Evans made a BBC Radio Wales documentary exploring the singer’s Welsh links and later became acquainted with people from Parton’s professional circle, including drummer Steve Turner.

She credited Parton’s work ethic with inspiring her and her partner to leave conventional jobs in 2012 and pursue their ambitions in American barbecue.

Stories like hers demonstrate why the renewed investigation into Parton’s ancestry resonates beyond a family tree.

Parton was unmistakably a daughter of Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains. Yet she understood that the music, stories and traditions surrounding her childhood had travelled through generations before reaching her.

The Welsh element was part of that inheritance — and it was one she was happy to embrace.

Whether the strongest ancestral trail ultimately leads to Conwy, Machynlleth or several Welsh communities remains open to further genealogical research. What is much clearer is that Parton regarded Wales with genuine affection and recognised the Owens family’s Welsh origins long before they became the subject of documentaries and archive investigations.

Now, following her death, that centuries-old connection has taken on new meaning.

As Wales joins the rest of the world in remembering Dolly Parton, researchers are still uncovering pieces of a family story that began generations before a girl from the Tennessee mountains became one of country music’s most enduring icons.
