Princess Kate Beams as Royal Family Gathers at Balmoral Days After Harry and Meghan’s UK Return News

Princess Kate appeared relaxed and smiling as she joined Prince William, their three children and other senior members of the Royal Family for Sunday church at Crathie Kirk — one of the family’s most visible outings since news emerged that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to Britain.
The Wales family attended the service near Balmoral on Sunday, August 23, during the royals’ traditional summer stay in Scotland. King Charles and Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence, as well as members of the Edinburgh family, were also seen arriving.
The timing inevitably attracted attention. Just days earlier, reports emerged that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning an extended return to the UK with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Kate and William arrive with George, Charlotte and Louis

Prince William drove the vehicle carrying the Princess of Wales and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Photographs from the arrival showed Kate smiling from the passenger seat as the family made its way to the small granite church in Aberdeenshire.
The King and Queen travelled separately, while Princess Anne and her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, were also among those attending. The Duke of Edinburgh and Lady Louise Windsor were photographed arriving in another vehicle.
Troops from Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland formed a guard of honour, lining the driveway as the royal cars approached Crathie Kirk. Members of the public had also gathered outside to watch the arrivals.
Crathie Kirk has long been closely associated with the Royal Family. Situated near Balmoral, the Church of Scotland parish church is regularly attended by the royals during their stays at the estate and was also frequently visited by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

A traditional gathering under unusual scrutiny
Although the sight of so many royals together prompted speculation that Balmoral had become the setting for discussions about Harry and Meghan, the family’s late-summer gathering in Scotland is a longstanding annual tradition rather than, in itself, evidence of an emergency summit.
The royals had begun arriving at Balmoral earlier in the week for their customary summer break.
What has made this year’s gathering particularly noteworthy is its coincidence with reports about the Sussexes’ plans.
Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 before establishing their life in the United States. Their expected return to Britain with Archie and Lilibet has consequently renewed attention on the couple’s relationship with the wider Royal Family.

Harry’s return puts family relationships back in focus

The prospect of Harry spending significantly more time in Britain has inevitably revived questions about whether his relationship with his family could change.
King Charles is reported to welcome the possibility of seeing more of Harry and his grandchildren privately. However, Harry’s relationship with Prince William remains one of the most closely watched elements of the Sussexes’ return, with years of public disagreements and broken trust still hanging over the brothers.
For now, Sunday’s appearance offered no public indication of how those private family issues may develop.
Instead, William, Kate and their children joined the King, Queen and other relatives for an outing firmly rooted in royal tradition.
The photographs of Kate smiling alongside her family therefore arrived at a particularly sensitive moment: just as attention is turning from the surprise of Harry and Meghan’s reported return to the much bigger question of what happens when the Sussexes are once again living on British soil.
