Three carefully chosen names. Three people Princess Eugenie says she and Jack Brooksbank “love and admire.” But one glaring family absence is suddenly attracting attention. Eugenie’s newborn daughter’s name contains a touching tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II and connections stretching through British and Portuguese history. Yet despite Eugenie’s famously close relationship with her mother, there is no obvious reference to Sarah Ferguson anywhere in the three-part name. There is no evidence it was an intentional snub — but after Eugenie publicly explained exactly why those names were chosen, the person apparently left out has become impossible to ignore.

Princess Eugenie’s Touching Baby Name Tribute Leaves One Striking Family Absence

Princess Eugenie’s carefully chosen name for her newborn daughter is filled with history and personal meaning, but one notable omission has inevitably attracted attention.

Two weeks after welcoming her first daughter with husband Jack Brooksbank, the 36-year-old revealed that their third child is named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.

The baby girl was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on August 3, and Eugenie made clear that each element of her name had been selected with particular significance.

According to the Princess, her daughter was “named after three people we love and admire past and present”.

It was a touching explanation — but one that also naturally prompted royal watchers to consider which members of Eugenie’s family were represented in the name and which were not.

And there appears to be no obvious reference to her mother, Sarah Ferguson.

Three meaningful names — but no obvious tribute to Sarah

Elizabeth carries the clearest family connection, serving as a tribute to Eugenie’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Adelaide, meanwhile, connects the newborn with both British royal and Portuguese history. Eugenie herself explained that the full name reflects two places that she and Jack “love and call home”.

Together with Annina, the three names create a combination Eugenie says honours people important to the couple, both past and present.

Yet there is no Sarah — nor any immediately identifiable variation or reference that appears to honour the newborn’s maternal grandmother.

That does not mean the omission was intentional.

There is no evidence that Eugenie deliberately excluded her mother as a snub, nor is there anything in the announcement suggesting tension between them. Parents are also under no obligation to incorporate the names of every close relative into their children’s names.

But Eugenie’s decision to explain publicly that all three names represent people she and Jack “love and admire” inevitably places greater attention on the identities behind those choices.

Eugenie and Sarah have long appeared exceptionally close

Inside Sarah Ferguson's close bond with Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie

The absence is particularly noticeable because Eugenie has maintained a close public relationship with Sarah over the years.

Sarah raised Eugenie and her older sister, Princess Beatrice, and the three women have frequently demonstrated their close family bond publicly.

For that reason, the lack of any obvious reference to Sarah in her granddaughter’s three-part name stands out.

Had Eugenie simply announced her daughter’s name without explaining its significance, there would have been little reason to analyse the family connections behind each part.

Instead, by revealing that the names were specifically chosen to honour admired individuals, attention naturally turns to exactly who inspired them.

Elizabeth has a clear answer. Adelaide has historical connections. Annina carries its own personal significance.

Sarah, however, does not appear to feature — at least not in any way that has been publicly explained.

The timing adds another layer of interest

The discussion comes during a difficult period for the wider York family.

Both Eugenie and Beatrice have continued building independent lives while facing renewed public attention surrounding controversies involving their parents.

Neither sister is responsible for the actions or controversies associated with their mother or father. Nevertheless, heightened scrutiny of the family means even seemingly straightforward personal decisions can attract considerable attention.

Against that backdrop, the birth of Eugenie’s daughter represented a joyful new chapter for the family.

It could also have provided an opportunity for Eugenie to include a subtle reference to her mother.

Instead, the Princess chose names connecting her daughter to the late Queen, royal history, Portugal and other people meaningful to herself and Jack.

An omission does not necessarily mean a snub

It is important not to read more into the decision than Eugenie herself has revealed.

There is nothing to suggest Sarah expected her granddaughter to carry her name, and she may simply be delighted by the arrival of another grandchild regardless of the choice.

Royal families also have extensive family trees, making it impossible for every significant relative to receive a naming tribute.

The point attracting attention is therefore not simply that “Sarah” is absent.

It is Eugenie’s own explanation that makes the omission more conspicuous.

By describing Adelaide Elizabeth Annina as a name honouring three people the couple “love and admire”, the Princess effectively invited greater curiosity about the individuals represented.

For now, there is no evidence of anything more significant behind Sarah’s apparent absence.

Still, in a three-part name deliberately filled with personal and historical meaning, the lack of an obvious tribute to Eugenie’s famously close mother is one detail royal watchers are unlikely to overlook.
