Tim Curry has died at 80 — but one of his final public moments is now taking on an entirely different meaning. Months before his passing, the Rocky Horror and It legend made a rare appearance after years of living with the effects of a major stroke. Still in his wheelchair, Curry delivered the unmistakable humor fans had loved for decades. Then someone in the crowd shouted, “I love you.” His response was just five words — and knowing what happened months later makes the moment incredibly poignant. See Tim Curry’s final appearances and the touching exchange fans are remembering below.

Tim Curry, Beloved Star of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clue and It, Dies at 80

Tim Curry, the singular British actor whose unmistakable voice, wicked humor and fearless performances made him a cult icon across film, television and theater, has died at the age of 80.

Curry died peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, on Tuesday, August 25, his longtime manager confirmed. PEOPLE also reported that Los Angeles police responded to a call that night and conducted a death investigation involving a man in his 80s.

His death closes a remarkable career that stretched across nearly six decades and produced characters that generations of viewers never forgot — from the flamboyant Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show to the terrifying Pennywise in It and the frantic butler Wadsworth in Clue.

Even after a major stroke in 2012 left him using a wheelchair, Curry remained connected to his work and his audience, making occasional public appearances, continuing voice projects and returning to celebrate the film that transformed his career.

The role that changed everything

Born in England on April 19, 1946, Curry began performing professionally on the British stage.

After attending the University of Birmingham, he landed a role in the original London production of Hair in 1968. According to his official biography, Curry had claimed he possessed professional experience and an Equity card when he actually had neither. By the time producers discovered the truth, they were impressed enough to sponsor his union membership.

His defining breakthrough came several years later with Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show.

Curry originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter onstage before bringing the character to the screen in 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The movie initially struggled commercially but ultimately became a cultural phenomenon, with Curry’s outrageous, magnetic performance at its center. More than 50 years later, the character remained inseparable from his legacy.

But Curry’s career was far larger than a single role.

From Annie and Clue to Pennywise

Curry became especially skilled at playing characters who could be hilarious, threatening and strangely charming all at once.

In 1982, he played Rooster Hannigan opposite Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters in Annie. Years later, Curry remembered the experience fondly, describing Rooster as a hustler who was enormous fun to play and recalling the close relationship he shared with his co-stars.

Then came another performance destined for cult status.

Curry played Wadsworth, the increasingly frantic butler at the center of 1985’s Clue. Like Rocky Horror, the movie grew considerably in reputation after its original release and became a beloved cult favorite.

He also appeared as Long John Silver in 1996’s Muppet Treasure Island, among numerous other film roles.

Yet for an entirely different generation of viewers, Curry was unforgettable because of one frightening character: Pennywise.

He portrayed the murderous clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It, delivering a performance that became one of the most recognizable portrayals of the character.

His ability to jump so convincingly between comedy, horror, musicals and family entertainment became one of the defining qualities of his career.

A celebrated stage career

Curry repeatedly returned to theater throughout his life, performing on major stages in both London and New York.

His stage work earned him three Tony Award nominations and two Laurence Olivier Award nominations.

One of his later Broadway triumphs came with Monty Python’s Spamalot, in which he originated the role of King Arthur on Broadway in 2005.

The role introduced Curry’s distinctive comic timing to yet another audience and became one of the most celebrated theatrical performances of the later part of his career.

The voice behind countless characters

Curry’s voice became nearly as recognizable as his face.

He built an extensive career in animation, audiobooks and video games, winning a Daytime Emmy in 1991 for his work on Peter Pan and the Pirates.

His voice credits extended across numerous animated productions, while he also recorded dozens of audiobooks.

Music was another significant part of his career. Curry released three albums: Read My Lips in 1978, Fearless in 1979 and Simplicity in 1981.

A major stroke changed his life in 2012

Curry suffered a severe stroke in 2012, a health crisis that dramatically altered his life and career.

He subsequently used a wheelchair and largely stepped away from conventional live-action acting, focusing more heavily on voice work.

But Curry did not disappear.

In 2015, he received a lifetime achievement honor at the Actors Fund Tony Awards Viewing Party, where he reunited with his Annie co-star Aileen Quinn.

Quinn later remembered the meeting as deeply emotional, emphasizing Curry’s kindness away from the larger-than-life villains audiences knew on screen.

A year later, Curry returned to the universe that had made him famous when he appeared as the narrator and criminologist in the 2016 television production The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.

Laverne Cox took on the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, while Curry lent his support to the new production.

As The Rocky Horror Picture Show approached its 50th anniversary, Curry made several rare appearances and spoke openly about the lasting effects of his stroke.

At a September 2025 anniversary screening at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, he explained that he still could not walk and continued to experience significant problems with his left leg.

He also recalled how unexpectedly the stroke had happened. Curry said he had been receiving a massage when the person working with him became concerned and called an ambulance — despite Curry initially believing the reaction was unnecessary.

His physical limitations, however, did little to diminish the sharp humor for which he had long been known.

During another Rocky Horror anniversary event at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in October 2025, Curry joked openly about being in a wheelchair before warmly responding to audience members who shouted that they loved him.

Those appearances became poignant reminders that, decades after first putting on Frank-N-Furter’s corset, Curry still shared an unusually strong bond with the audience that had embraced him.

His final public appearance came later in 2025 during another celebration of Rocky Horror in New York City.

Looking back on his life in Vagabond

In October 2025, Curry published his memoir, Vagabond.

The book revisited his childhood, boarding school and university years as well as the extraordinary career that followed across theater, movies, television and music.

Ahead of its publication, Curry said he had thoroughly enjoyed revisiting his memories while putting the book together.

The memoir arrived at a particularly meaningful moment, coinciding with renewed celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Curry never married and had no children.

Tributes to an unforgettable performer

Tim Curry attends the 59th Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall June 5, 2005 in New York City.

Following confirmation of his death, tributes quickly began arriving from people who had worked with him and performers inspired by his career.

His Rocky Horror colleagues remembered both his extraordinary talent and his generosity. Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell and Richard O’Brien were among those paying tribute, with Quinn describing herself as heartbroken by the news.

Carol Burnett also remembered her Annie co-star as a dear friend, while Michael McKean, Selma Blair, Josh Gad and other figures across entertainment honored Curry and the influence his performances had on them.

That influence is difficult to contain within any one character.

Curry could terrify audiences as Pennywise, reduce them to laughter in Clue, command a Broadway stage as King Arthur and create a character in Dr. Frank-N-Furter who would remain a cultural icon half a century later.

More than 50 years after Rocky Horror first introduced many viewers to him, Curry was still celebrating that extraordinary connection with fans.

Now, his performances — eccentric, fearless, funny and utterly distinctive — remain behind as the legacy of an actor audiences were unlikely ever to mistake for anyone else.
